Choosing an electric hot water system
Electric storage hot water systems, units and services that heat water and keep it ready in an insulated tank. Brands include Rinnai.
Electric storage systems are simple to install and run on the power supply most homes already have, which makes them a popular like-for-like replacement. They range from compact tanks for a kitchenette, unit or granny flat to large tanks for family homes.
Before you buy
- Match your existing system. Check the tank capacity, height and width, and where the pipes and power connect, so the new system fits the same space.
- Check your tariff. Continuous tariff systems heat whenever they need to. Off-peak systems only heat at set times, usually overnight, so they need a larger tank to last the day.
- Size for your home. Victoria's solar hot water buyers guide estimates each person uses around 50 litres of hot water a day, and suggests a storage tank should hold about a day and a half's supply.
- Think about running costs. If you have rooftop solar, ask your electrician about heating during the day. A heat pump hot water system uses much less electricity to heat the same water.
- Licensed installation. Installation must be done by a licensed plumber and electrician.
Frequently asked questions
Why is stored hot water kept so hot?
Stored water needs to reach 60°C regularly to stop Legionella bacteria growing in the tank. A tempering valve then lowers the temperature delivered to bathrooms.
Electric storage or instant hot water?
Storage systems hold a set amount ready to use and suit homes without gas. Instant hot water systems heat water on demand, so they don't run out, but only supply a limited flow at once.
