Choosing the right oven
Shop built-in wall ovens, freestanding cookers, dual fuel ovens and more from Fisher & Paykel, Smeg, Bosch, Westinghouse, Artusi and other leading brands.
Types of ovens
- Built-in wall ovens install under the bench or in a wall tower. Most are 60cm or 90cm wide, with 70cm, 75cm and 77cm models also available.
- Double ovens have two separate cavities that can cook at different temperatures at the same time.
- Freestanding ovens, also called upright cookers, combine an oven and cooktop in one unit. They come in electric, gas and dual fuel (a gas cooktop with an electric oven).
- Elevated ovens raise the oven to bench height beside the cooktop, so there's less bending.
- Steam ovens use steam, often combined with conventional heat, to keep food moist.
- Portable ovens sit on your benchtop and need no installation.
Cleaning options
Pyrolytic ovens heat to very high temperatures, around 400–500°C, turning grease and spills into ash you wipe away. Catalytic liners absorb grease during normal cooking. Standard enamel ovens are cleaned by hand.
Before you buy
- Measure carefully. An oven's width isn't the same as the cabinet cut-out it needs, so check the installation dimensions for each model.
- Check your connections. Some electric ovens plug into a power point, while others must be hardwired. Gas ovens need a licensed gasfitter, run on natural gas or LPG depending on the model, and often still need power for ignition.
- Look at usable capacity. Usable space can be noticeably smaller than the gross capacity listed.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose a gas or electric oven?
Electric ovens offer more cooking functions and features like pyrolytic cleaning. Gas ovens suit cooks who prefer gas heat. Your choice may also depend on the connections in your kitchen.
What size oven do I need?
A 60cm oven suits most households. If you cook for a crowd, consider an extra-wide or double oven, and check your space first.
How easy are ovens to clean?
It depends on the cleaning system. Pyrolytic ovens do most of the work for you, catalytic liners help between cleans, and enamel ovens need manual cleaning.
