Choosing the right cooktop
Gas, induction, ceramic and domino cooktops from Fisher & Paykel, Smeg, Bosch, Westinghouse, Artusi and other leading brands.
Types of cooktops
- Gas cooktops give responsive flame control and work with any pan. Models run on natural gas or LPG, and larger cooktops often add a wok burner.
- Induction cooktops heat the pan directly for fast, precise control. They need cookware with a magnetic base.
- Electric cooktops (ceramic and solid element) heat an element under the surface and work with any flat-based cookware.
- Domino cooktops are compact modules you can use alone or combine, such as a gas wok burner beside an induction module.
Before you buy
- Match the cut-out, not the width. 60cm and 90cm are the most common sizes, but cut-outs vary between models, so check the installation dimensions.
- Check your connections. Gas cooktops must be installed by a licensed gasfitter. Many induction and ceramic cooktops are hardwired, and some need a higher-rated circuit.
- Allow for the rangehood. Gas cooktops need a minimum clearance to the rangehood above, set by the manufacturer and local rules.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose gas or induction?
Gas gives you a visible flame and works with any pan. Induction is faster, more precise and easier to clean, but needs compatible cookware and a suitable electrical supply.
Will my pans work on induction?
If a magnet sticks firmly to the base, it will usually work. Check the base is flat and suits the size of the cooking zone.
What size cooktop do I need?
A 60cm cooktop suits most households, while 90cm models give you more burners and room for big pans. If you're replacing one, match the cut-out.
