Choosing the right dishwasher
Freestanding, built-in, integrated, slimline, benchtop and DishDrawer™ dishwashers from Fisher & Paykel, Smeg, Bosch, Westinghouse, Artusi and other leading brands.
Types of dishwashers
- Freestanding dishwashers have a finished top and sides. Some have a removable top so they can fit under a bench, where the installation guide allows it.
- Built-in dishwashers fit under the benchtop with their own finished front.
- Semi-integrated dishwashers sit behind a cabinetry panel with the control strip left visible.
- Fully integrated dishwashers hide completely behind a cabinetry panel, with controls on the top edge of the door.
- Slimline dishwashers are 45cm wide and full height, for narrow spaces.
- Benchtop and compact dishwashers suit small kitchens and smaller households.
- DishDrawer™ dishwashers from Fisher & Paykel have one or two drawers you can run separately.
Before you buy
- Measure the cavity. Most full-size dishwashers are 60cm wide and around 82–85cm high, so check height carefully under your benchtop.
- Plan panels early. Integrated models need a door panel made to the dishwasher's specifications, usually by your cabinetmaker. Panels are rarely sold with the dishwasher. Check the kickplate height and depth the model needs too.
- Compare the labels. Check the energy and WELS water star ratings, and the noise level if your kitchen is open plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can a freestanding dishwasher go under the bench?
Some can. Certain models, including some Westinghouse freestanding dishwashers, have a top that can be removed for under-bench installation, lowering the height by about 3cm. Only do this where the installation guide allows it.
Why is there water in my new dishwasher?
Many dishwashers are tested at the factory before they're packed, so a little water left inside is normal and shows the machine was checked.
What's the difference between semi and fully integrated?
Semi-integrated models leave the control strip visible above the panel. Fully integrated models hide everything behind the panel, with controls on the top edge of the door.
