Choosing the right clothes dryer
Heat pump, condenser and vented clothes dryers. Brands include Fisher & Paykel, Bosch, Samsung, Electrolux and Westinghouse.
Types of dryers
- Vented dryers are the simplest and cheapest to buy. They release warm, moist air into the room, so they need good ventilation. Many can be wall-mounted.
- Condenser dryers collect the moisture in a tank or send it down a drain hose, so they suit laundries without much airflow.
- Heat pump dryers also collect the moisture but reuse the heat, making them the most energy efficient to run. Cycles can take a little longer.
Before you buy
- Match your washer. Choose a drying capacity close to your washing machine's capacity, so a full wash load can go straight in.
- Plan the space. Stacking on a front loader and wall-mounting are model-specific and need the right kit, so check before you plan your laundry.
- Compare running costs. Check the energy star rating. A heat pump dryer usually costs more upfront but much less to run.
- Look for sensor drying. Moisture sensors stop the cycle when clothes are dry, which saves energy and is kinder to fabrics.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to empty a condenser dryer?
Either empty the water tank after each cycle, or connect the drain hose so the water goes straight down the drain, where the model allows it.
How often should I clean the lint filter?
After every load. A blocked filter makes the dryer work harder and take longer.
Heat pump or condenser?
Both collect the moisture instead of venting it into the room. Heat pump dryers cost more to buy but use much less energy, so they suit households that dry often.
Can I put a dryer on top of my washing machine?
Many front loaders and dryers can be stacked with the right stacking kit from the same brand. Check both manuals before you buy.
Short on space? A washer dryer washes and dries in one machine.
