Choosing the right fridge

Types of fridges

• Top mount fridges have the freezer on top. They're simple, good value and a common choice for rentals and smaller households.
• Bottom mount fridges put the fridge section at eye level, with a freezer drawer below.
• French door fridges have two fridge doors above one or more freezer drawers, and suit larger households.
• Side by side fridges have a full-height fridge beside a full-height freezer. Some include a plumbed water and ice dispenser.
• Quad door fridges have four doors, and some include a zone that can switch between fridge and freezer.
• Integrated fridges sit behind cabinetry doors for a seamless look. The doors are usually made by your cabinetmaker, as matching doors are rarely sold separately.

Before you buy

• Measure the space and the way in. Check the cavity height, width and depth, then allow the ventilation gaps in the installation guide. Measure doorways, hallways and stairs too.
• Check the doors. Make sure the doors can open far enough to pull out crispers and shelves, especially if the fridge sits beside a wall.
• Compare usable space. Total litres don't tell the whole story, so compare shelf layout and the split between fridge and freezer.
• Check the energy rating. The Energy Rating Label shows estimated yearly energy use in kWh, the easiest way to compare running costs.
• Garage or outdoor room? Check the fridge's climate class. A model rated for higher room temperatures copes better in a hot garage.

It depends on your household and how often you shop. Measure your space first, then compare usable capacity and layout. A separate freezer or bar fridge can take the pressure off the kitchen fridge.

Do I need a water connection?

Only for models with a plumbed water and ice dispenser. Some fridges have a refillable water tank instead, so check the listing.
