Choosing the right rangehood
Undermount, canopy, slideout, fixed and island rangehoods from Schweigen, Fisher & Paykel, Smeg, Bosch, Westinghouse and other leading brands.
Types of rangehoods
- Undermount rangehoods sit concealed in the cabinetry above the cooktop.
- Slideout rangehoods have a fascia that pulls out when you cook and tucks away when you don't.
- Fixed rangehoods mount under a cupboard, a simple, practical option.
- Canopy rangehoods mount on the wall as a feature piece above the cooktop, venting through a flue, or recirculating with a carbon filter on some models.
- Island rangehoods hang from the ceiling above an island cooktop.
Before you buy
- Ducted or recirculating. Ducted rangehoods vent steam and odours outside, not into the roof cavity. Recirculating models filter the air back into the room and need carbon filters.
- Size. 60cm and 90cm are the most common widths. Choose a rangehood at least as wide as your cooktop.
- Clearance. Above a gas cooktop, the rangehood must sit at the minimum height set by the manufacturer and local rules.
- Noise. Compare noise figures measured the same way, as brands quote different units.
- Replacing a rangehood? Check the new one suits your existing cut-out and can use the same ducting or flue, otherwise these may need changing. Your installer can confirm.
- Silent options. Schweigen silent rangehoods have the motor mounted outside, on the wall or roof, so most of the noise stays out of your kitchen.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose ducted or recirculating?
Ducted is more effective, because it removes moisture as well as smoke and odours. Recirculating suits kitchens where ducting isn't possible, but the carbon filters need replacing.
What size rangehood do I need?
At least as wide as your cooktop. Many people go one size up for better capture.
