Choosing the right air conditioner
Split system and reverse cycle air conditioners to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. Brands include Fujitsu, Panasonic, Electrolux, Rinnai and Hisense.
Types of air conditioners
- Split systems have an indoor unit on the wall and an outdoor unit outside. They're the most popular choice for bedrooms and living areas.
- Reverse cycle models heat as well as cool, and are one of the most efficient ways to heat a room with electricity.
- Window/wall units fit into a window or wall opening as a single unit, which can suit smaller rooms.
- Inverter models adjust their speed to hold a steady temperature, so they run more quietly and efficiently than fixed-speed units.
Before you buy
- Size it properly. Capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW). As a rough guide, about 2.5kW suits a small bedroom, 3.5kW a larger bedroom or small living room, and 5 to 8kW a living area. Insulation, ceiling height, windows and sun exposure all change what you need, so get a sizing check before you buy.
- Check the energy label. The Zoned Energy Rating Label shows heating and cooling performance for hot, average and cold climate zones, so check the rating for where you live.
- Plan the outdoor unit. Allow space with good airflow, and think about noise near bedrooms and neighbours.
- Licensed installation. Split systems must be installed by a licensed technician, as the work involves refrigerant and electrical connections.
- Rebates. Some states offer incentives to upgrade to an efficient reverse cycle air conditioner. Check your state government's energy website.
